Text
That transition has historically been one of the difficult parts of the system. Whilst we do a lot of work to ensure that there is a proper transition for people leaving custody, including having accommodation and support in the community, it is not always a seamless process. Unfortunately, for many prisoners, when they go back into the community, they have to find a GP, because they do not know where they will be living. They then have to be referred by their GP to mental health services. Prisons are trying to look at how we can streamline those processes with the Department of Health. The same is true when it comes to housing. The ideal situation would be that we know in advance where every prisoner will live and have them preregistered with a GP so that, when they leave, they can receive any medication and have access to the therapeutic services that they received in prison. Unfortunately, however, that is not currently the case.
