Text

As I mentioned earlier in Question Time, as part of the review of 20 mph speed limits around some of our schools, the question of whether it would be appropriate to introduce 20 mph zones in certain other areas, particularly residential areas, has arisen. We need to explore that further. I am aware of the clamour in Wales to reduce the number of 20 mph speed limits. The approach taken in Wales was much more general than I would propose. I would propose that we look at residential areas that have no through roads to see whether a reduction of the speed limit to 20 mph would increase safety for whoever happens to be using the road. We need to explore that further.
