Text
I thank the Chair of the Committee for her comments. The next steps are difficult, because, as I said to Ms Bradshaw, we are in a classic situation where arbitration is the only way to go forward. Were I, as Minister, to go forward with the BMA junior doctors committee on its terms, purely discussing pay, there is no guarantee that we would reach a mutually agreeable resolution, particularly given the budgetary constraints that I am operating under.
The other point to make is this: how repercussive would it be to reach a pay agreement with the junior doctors, given the sort of quantum that they wish to achieve in those negotiations? I can say only that I am not looking at a plan B. What I am doing is encouraging them to sit down with the Department and engage in meaningful, constructive and equitable arbitration.
