Text

Before my first child was born, I read to my wife. Hopefully, Annie picked up some of it before she came into this world. The importance of reading cannot be overstated, because it has a hugely beneficial impact on children's development. I will therefore reinstate that important programme. Northern Ireland is the only part of the United Kingdom where the Bookstart Baby programme is not currently available. I am determined to address that inequality. I have asked BookTrust to submit a proposal to extend that important provision to Northern Ireland this year. The funding that was made available by the Executive to support the early learning and childcare strategy will enable us to put in place that vital provision for the youngest children.
