Text

What needs to be done to deal with it is that the public need to recognise that, when the police are doing their job, they are there to protect the public, preserve life and keep people safe. The public need to be supportive of the police in that. There has to be a culture in which we do not tolerate attacks on the police. We can all contribute to that in how we conduct ourselves when discussing such matters. There will be operational things that lie with the Chief Constable and the Policing Board that they may wish to pursue, but as it stands those are prosecutable offences in current legislation, and, after the passage of the legislation that, hopefully, will be passed in this mandate, they will also be aggravated offences.
