Text
It is vital that prison staff are supported to undertake their role of supporting and challenging people in prison to change and return to society equipped to make a positive contribution to their community. That is one of the reasons why, in June 2020, I commissioned a focused review of measures available to support prison officers. Two evidence-based reports, one on serving staff and one on retired staff, were published in January 2021, alongside implementation plans. The report made 12 recommendations for operational staff, which included the completion of a grading review, the further development of bespoke support services and the establishment of well-being hubs in our prisons. There has been substantial progress on those recommendations. By way of example, in 2023, over 400 staff were provided with bespoke training and support from the Police Rehabilitation and Retraining Trust (PRRT). That partnership continues to evolve and progress.
