Text

I welcome the motion on the draft Lay Magistrates (Eligibility) Order. It brings the age for lay magistrates into line with that of other members of the judiciary, which is currently 75 years old, whilst keeping the other reappointment criteria, as laid out by the Minister earlier. Addressing the unfairness that existed for some individuals who may have been prevented from continuing in their role is an important step, and this rule corrects that unfairness. Lay magistrates play an important role in our judiciary, particularly, as was said, around the youth courts, family proceedings and signatory duties. I am happy to support the motion.
