Text

I thank the Member for giving way. I note that, when you were speaking, Members from the Alliance Party were rolling their eyes. Will you remind the House, Mr Lyons, how many times the Alliance Party recalled the House when Sinn Féin brought it down for three years? Will you remind the House how many times the Alliance Party tried to exclude Sinn Féin from government? Unionists will not sit down and be quiet. We are going to have our say.

Assessment

Qualifying Constitutional question, Brexit, the Windsor Framework and sovereignty

Decided as qualifying on a second assessment, because Jev’s answers did not settle it. The reasons are given below.

  • Overall probability that the activity is being used to promote, exploit or escalate an identity-based controversy: 0.78 (qualifying needs at least 0.70; at or below 0.30 is not qualifying).
  • Criteria met: Identity framing (0.92); Controversy escalation (0.60).
  • The text adopts the identity-based framing in its own voice (0.59).
  • Subject area: Constitutional question, Brexit, the Windsor Framework and sovereignty.
  • The answers did not meet either automatic threshold.

This is an AI-generated assessment of the text, made against published criteria. It is not a finding of fact about the MLA or their intentions. The Assembly record itself is the fact.

Second assessment

Jev’s answers did not settle this record, so a second model, claude-opus-5-5, read the same text (without the MLA’s name or party) and gave its reasons on 21 October 2026. How the second assessment works

Verdict
Qualifying
Public interest or divisiveness
Mainly advances divisiveness

Against the published rubric

The intervention does not engage with the business before the House, the election of a Speaker. Instead it accuses another party of treating unionists differently from republicans, asking how often it 'recalled the House' or tried to 'exclude' them. It closes with a communal declaration: 'Unionists will not sit down and be quiet.' This frames the recall dispute as a contest in which one community is being silenced, which fits the rubric's identity-framing and grievance tests, and there is no practical policy request.

Public interest or divisiveness

Its evident function is partisan and communal point-scoring: it presents one community as wronged and another party as hostile to it, prompted by members 'rolling their eyes'. Criticising a party's record is ordinary politics, but here the criticism serves a grievance about unionism being told to be quiet, which deepens rather than addresses division over the institutions' collapse.
