Reiterating Unconditional Support for the Rule of Law
That this Assembly believes support for upholding the rule of law is essential to maintaining stability and confidence in the devolved institutions; deplores the actions of those elected representatives who participated in, encouraged, or directed the recent unnotified and unlawful protest on the Garvaghy Road in Portadown; condemns, in particular, the First Minister’s pledge to stand firmly against the law in certain circumstances; stresses that the rule of law must be applied without fear or favour and that lawmakers engaged in lawbreaking should be brought to justice; calls on the Minister of Justice to exercise her powers under the Police (Northern Ireland) Act 2000 to remove Miss Deirdre Hargey as a member of the Policing Board with immediate effect; and further calls on the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland to consider strengthening the law to increase democratic accountability for those local elected representatives who undermine support for the rule of law.
