Proactive Testing and Diagnosis of Genetic Haemochromatosis
That this Assembly welcomes the new Haemochromatosis UK screening initiative and commends the work of patients and clinicians in raising awareness of this common inherited condition, often known as the Celtic Disease; notes that genetic haemochromatosis can cause serious iron overload affecting vital organs yet is frequently undiagnosed despite effective treatment being available when detected early; affirms that early diagnosis is essential to ensuring that people living with genetic haemochromatosis get access to the treatment they need before it leads to serious and devasting consequences; recognises the unequivocal benefits of genetic screening for genetic haemochromatosis to both individuals and the broader economy here; further notes with concern that 1 in 10 people here are at risk of iron overload from genetic hemochromatosis; and calls on the Minister of Health to consider the findings of this initiative once completed by Hemochromatosis UK, to explore the expansion of proactive testing and diagnosis within primary care, and to strengthen support and awareness for all those impacted by genetic haemochromatosis.
