Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) Patient Support

That this Assembly acknowledges the significant ongoing challenges faced by people with myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) to overcome both the day-to-day uncertainties of living with the condition and the stigma arising from the fact that it was, until recently, unrecognised even within much of the medical profession; endorses the work of charities such as Hope4ME & Fibro and ME Support Northern Ireland in supporting people living with the condition and informing the public about it; expresses ongoing frustration at the absence of adequate support and services for people in Northern Ireland living with ME, including those whose symptoms arose after they tested positive for COVID-19; recognises the importance of including ME as a mandatory topic in undergraduate education and training for healthcare professionals; supports awareness campaigns to inform the public and further remove the stigma associated with the condition; and calls on the Minister of Health to work with the Health and Social Care Trusts to appoint a regional Clinical Lead for ME as a matter of urgency to ensure that care and support is aligned by National Institute for Health and Care Excellence Guidelines.
