Addressing the Impact of Illegal Immigration in Northern Ireland - Amendment 3
Leave out all after 'legal migration to the UK;’ and insert:
‘regrets that international conflict, persecution, the impact of climate change and the lack of safe, legal routes are forcing people to seek sanctuary in the UK via irregular journeys; expresses alarm that the estimated cost of accommodation for asylum seekers in Northern Ireland, which is often unfit for purpose, has risen to £400 million, as detailed in the National Audit Office briefing on the Home Office’s asylum accommodation contracts; recognises that people who come to Northern Ireland from other countries make a significant and positive contribution to our economy, health service and communities; notes that the majority of owner-occupied, private rented and social homes are occupied by people born in Northern Ireland; and calls on the Minister for Infrastructure to work with the Minister for Communities and local councils to deliver sustainable levels of high quality housing for all, including through reviewing the Strategic Planning Policy Statement and capping Houses in Multiple Occupation in tightly-defined areas.’
