Criminal Bar Association Strike

The negotiations between the Department of Justice and the NI Criminal bar association have been ongoing for months. However, the decision to launch a strike has been a recent one. Our understanding is that the Department of Justice and the Criminal Bar Association continued these negotiations last week as both sides sought a resolution that might prevent today’s strike. As the NI Assembly was on recess last week the Assembly did not have the opportunity to question the Minister on these negotiations and what mitigating steps she might be taking.

Given the fast moving nature of this issue and the fact that Members have been unable last week to question the Minister on the most recent development, we believe this meets the category of urgent.
