Extending Welfare Supplementary Payments for the Benefit Cap
That this Assembly agrees on the importance of extending welfare supplementary payments for the benefit cap beyond the pending cliff edge in March 2025; recognises that mitigating the benefit cap is an important protection against poverty and hardship for families in Northern Ireland; expresses deep concern that the Child Poverty Action Group 2024 briefing paper, Why Scrapping the Household Benefit Cap is Vital for Families, Children and Survivors of Abuse, shows that, in Great Britain, the benefit cap traps families in deep poverty, disproportionately impacts on children and survivors of domestic abuse, contributes to homelessness, and has been ineffective at moving people into work; and calls on the Minister for Communities to urgently bring forward regulations to extend welfare supplementary payments for the benefit cap beyond 31 March 2025.
