Text

To ask the Minister of Education to detail (i) whether his Department has made any assessment of the fact that only two of 78 authors referenced as exemplars in the draft English and Drama curriculum are from the North; and (ii) any steps he will take to ensure that Irish literary voices are appropriately represented in the final curriculum.

Assessment

Not flagged

Not flagged on a second assessment, because Jev’s answers did not settle it. The reasons are given below.

  • Overall probability that the activity is being used to promote, exploit or escalate an identity-based controversy: 0.29 (flagging needs at least 0.70; at or below 0.30 is not flagged).
  • Criteria met: Cultural grievance politics (0.85).
  • No identity-based framing was identified (0.78).
  • Subject area: Sport (including the GAA), the arts and cultural bodies.
  • The overall probability was low but at least one criterion was strongly met; the answers conflict, so it is left uncertain.

Second assessment

Jev’s answers did not settle this record, so a second model, claude-opus-5-5, read the same text (without the MLA’s name or party) and gave its reasons on 21 October 2026. How the second assessment works

Public interest or divisiveness
Mainly advances the public interest

Against the published rubric

The question asks whether the department has assessed the finding that "only two of 78 authors" in the draft English and Drama curriculum exemplars are local, and what steps will ensure "Irish literary voices are appropriately represented". This is a concrete question about the content of a draft curriculum that is still open to change. It does not frame the matter as one community winning or losing, disparage any group or culture, or call for anything to be removed. The request has a practical purpose that someone with a different identity view could still recognise.

Public interest or divisiveness

The question mainly advances the public interest by scrutinising a live policy decision: which authors pupils will study, and whether local writing is adequately reflected. The same kind of question could reasonably be asked about Ulster, Scottish or other regional writers. Its focus is on representation in education, not on grievance or hostility towards another tradition.
