Text
The motion is not about upholding the rule of law; it is another political stunt. In fact, the motion just further exposes the utter hypocrisy of the DUP. Here is one for you. Here is what one of the proposers of the motion, Diane Dodds, had to say on 27 May 2026:
"Residents are entitled to go about their daily lives without unnecessary disruption from what is widely viewed as a deliberately provocative parade which serves no legitimate purpose within the area. We strongly impressed upon the Commission that the protection of community relations and public order must come before facilitating a deeply divisive demonstration."
That is what she had to say in response to a peaceful demonstration against Israel's genocide of the Palestinian people. In fact, her party colleague Carla Lockhart stood alongside masked men who had gathered to intimidate. Honestly, the hypocrisy reeks. The motion is not about the rule of law. It was never about upholding the rule of law. What is it about? It is about the DUP not getting its own way.
The people of the Garvaghy Road were forced back in time to a place of fear, pain and uncertainty that they thought they would never, ever face again. The unwanted march has rightly been stopped and the voices of the residents on the Garvaghy Road have finally been heard, but political unionism is now in such a tailspin: the hypocrisy, scandal and sleaze just keeps catching up with them. The hypocrisy of the Garvaghy Road is just another attempt at deflection and to demonise a community who stood peacefully against sectarian intimidation and harassment.
No. It is your motion. You have plenty of time to contribute. When it comes to the rule of law, the DUP should look much closer to home. Its former leader is currently in Maghaberry Prison for child rape and sexual abuse. Jim Shannon is being investigated for common assault. The actions of Edwin Poots, Gordon Lyons and Paul Givan were found to be unlawful and in abject breach of their solemn pledge as Executive Ministers when they did not take part in the North/South Ministerial Council meetings. Gregory Campbell is being investigated in an expenses probe, while Sammy Wilson is under investigation by the Standards Commissioner.
Former First Minister Ian Paisley was convicted of unlawful assembly and served time in prison. Former First Minister Peter Robinson pleaded guilty to unlawful assembly after the Clontibret incursion, so please, please, spare us that faux outrage. Everyone can see it for what it is: it is a deliberate attempt to distract the public from the raft of scandal and sleaze that your party is entrenched in. Sinn Féin has stood in solidarity with the residents of the Garvaghy Road. I am deeply, deeply proud of the action that my party colleagues and thousands of people across this island took. We, on these Benches, will always stand on the side of right. The days of domination and supremacy are over. The days of the Orange state are over, and the days of the DUP lambasting and suppressing those who strive for fairness and equality are over. There is no going back.

- The text adopts an antagonistic or dog-whistle framing, which is flagged even alongside legitimate scrutiny.
What a flag means. A flag means the activity contains at least one instance of culture-war framing that met the published test. It does not mean the whole activity is divisive, or that its substantive arguments are wrong.
This is an AI-generated assessment of the text, made against published criteria. It is not a finding of fact about the MLA or their intentions. The Assembly record itself is the fact.

A second, larger AI model can read this record again, without being told the MLA’s name or party, against the same published rubric. It also asks whether the activity mainly serves the public interest or mainly advances division. Its verdict replaces the current one, whichever way it goes, and its reasons are published here. Each record can have one second assessment.
If you still think the record or its classification is wrong after that, or the record itself has a factual error, you can challenge it. A person reads every challenge, and any change is recorded publicly above with its reason.
