Text
The Member is right. At the moment — the caveat being that it is just at the moment — the costs are around £5·5 million for the policing operation. I would not go as far as to say that I am hopeful that the NIO will make an exception when it comes to the issue, but I will certainly make that case to it, because, irrespective of the Budget negotiations and discussions, this is not something that we could have easily anticipated or that lies within legislation that is in our gift as Members of the House. Therefore, there has to be some reasonable balance of the responsibilities. Ultimately, if the NIO does not find the additional resourcing, we will need to find it from within the Justice budget. Given the projected overspend that we already have this year, I just do not see how that is possible.
