Text
Thank you, Andy. Tackling climate change is not simply a must-do but a major opportunity for Northern Ireland. It can create significant opportunities for our communities; new green jobs and skills; greater energy security; warmer, healthier homes; businesses; nature restoration; and more resilient farms. That is alongside sustainable land management, low-carbon construction and the circular economy. The economic case is strong. The Climate Change Committee (CCC) estimates that, under its balanced pathway to net zero, every £1 spent towards net zero could deliver between £2·20 and £4·10 in benefits, and that the UK health and well-being co-benefits will equate to £2 billion to £8 billion each year by 2050. That is further backed up by the work of Nicholas Stern, who sets out the benefits associated with climate change. Stern said:
"We have in our hands a new growth story for the 21st century."
Seizing those opportunities, in line with the just transition principle, could diversify rural economies, retain skills and support long-term prosperity while protecting low-income households and ensuring that no community or sector is left behind. That is the Northern Ireland that we want and deserve.
