Text
I rise to pay tribute to the life of Mr Terry Harryman, who, sadly, recently passed away. Terry was a true sporting icon who brought great pride to Bangor, north Down and, indeed, Northern Ireland through a remarkable rallying career spanning more than five decades. He was one of the finest co-drivers of his generation, navigating for some of the biggest names in rallying, including Ari Vatanen, Paddy Hopkirk, Michele Mouton, Malcolm Wilson and Jimmy McRae. His partnership with Ari Vatanen was particularly successful, bringing his career to great heights and success across the world, securing six World Rally Championship victories and nine podium finishes, including wins at some of the most iconic rallies in the world, including in the Safari, Finland, Monte Carlo and RAC rallies. Terry even helped Michele Mouton to win the 1986 German rally championship and enjoyed considerable success here at home, across the UK and beyond. It was fitting that his outstanding achievements and legacy of success were recognised by Ards and North Down Borough Council by his induction on to the wall of fame at his local leisure centre, the Aurora in Bangor, in 2024. My thoughts and condolences are with the Harryman family and his many friends at this sad time. He will certainly be remembered for his incredible career as one of the finest rally co-drivers from Northern Ireland.
