Text
This morning, there were reports that over 100 schools across Northern Ireland received threatening emails that are deeply disturbing and utterly unacceptable. I condemn such reckless and dreadful behaviour in the strongest possible terms. Those responsible have shown a complete disregard for the safety, well-being and education of our children and for the dedicated staff who work tirelessly to provide a safe learning environment. No child should ever have to experience the fear, uncertainty and disruption caused by such threats. Schools must remain places of learning, security and opportunity, not targets for intimidation and alarm. I commend school staff and the PSNI for their swift response in prioritising the safety of our children and providing reassurance to parents during what must be an extremely distressing situation. My thoughts are with all pupils, families and school communities affected today. To parents who received the alarming news, I say this: I fully appreciate the fear and anxiety that you will be feeling. Your children's safety is the highest priority, and I encourage you to follow the guidance provided by your school and the emergency services. Every child has the right to learn in an environment founded on respect, safety, rights, equality and dignity, free from intimidation, threats and disruption. Today's events are a stark reminder that we must stand united in condemning any such action that puts our children at risk. Violence and the threat of violence must always be condemned regardless of where they come from or who is responsible for them. As a society, we must stand united in condemning any action that places our children at risk and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that every school remains a safe place where young people can learn, grow and thrive. We cannot demand respect for rights, equality and the rule of law from others while excusing or justifying unlawful behaviour when it suits our interests. Such hypocrisy undermines public confidence and weakens the very foundations of our society. The law must be respected, upheld and applied equally to all. Today, our thoughts are with the whole school community.
