Text
Today, the £63 household electricity discount comes into effect. I commend the Sinn Féin Minister for the Economy, Caoimhe Archibald, for bringing in the scheme and for putting money back in people's pockets. Electricity suppliers will implement the discount automatically, with the £63 being credited to bills or added when prepaid meter or pay-as-you-go customers top up their prepaid meter card. The discount comes at a time when people are continuing to struggle with the cost-of-living crisis, as high fuel and grocery costs prevail, thus making it much harder for them to make ends meet. As we move into the winter, people will be using more electricity in the home, so it is a timely intervention. The £63 electricity discount does not, however, deal with all the pressures being felt by households. We will therefore continue to work to support people here. That includes continuing to insist on having a Budget that protects people, that properly invests in public services and that ensures that people get the services and support that they need.
