The Member will be aware that each site is considered on its merits, but I am glad to outline the additional steps that we are considering taking. The issue of lithium ion batteries is of growing concern, not just in Northern Ireland but across the waste management sector more widely. The increasing number of batteries entering mixed-waste streams presents significant challenges for operators and regulators, particularly given the fire risks associated with damaged or improperly handled batteries. My officials are working closely with regulators, industry stakeholders and UK Government counterparts to assess potential measures to mitigate battery fire risks. A consultation on the implementation of the EU's batteries regulation and wider UK policy alignment is expected later this year and will help to inform any future policy interventions. Addressing this issue requires action across the supply chain, from consumers disposing of batteries correctly to operators implementing robust controls and regulators ensuring that effective safeguards are in place to protect people, property and the environment.
