Text
While responsibility for the regulation of gas tariffs rests with the independent Utility Regulator and energy policy is the responsibility of the Department for the Economy, I remain committed to supporting households experiencing fuel poverty and wider financial hardship. Through the warm healthy homes strategy, I have established a long-term, cross-government framework to help to reduce costs, improve energy efficiency, strengthen advice services and enhance consumer protection. A key commitment in the strategy is the establishment of the warm healthy homes fund, which is due to launch in spring 2027. To support its delivery, I am seeking Executive backing for £150 million over five years to improve the energy efficiency of homes and provide lasting support for households that are most at risk of fuel poverty. My Department continues to support households that face rising energy costs through initiatives, including the Make the Call service, the discretionary support scheme and the Housing Executive's Northern Ireland Energy Advice service. To strengthen that support, I intend to introduce changes to the discretionary support scheme later this year to ensure that fuel grant assistance is available to eligible households, regardless of their home heating source, which will help to provide a fairer and more consistent approach for households facing fuel poverty.
