Text

I send my good wishes and congratulations, those of Sinn Féin and, hopefully, those of the whole Assembly to Katie Taylor, not only on her incredible win in Croke Park on Saturday night but, more importantly, on her entire professional career as a female boxer. It is hard to measure the impact that she has had not only on boxing in Ireland and globally but more so on women's sport here. She is an inspiration to athletes right across Ireland and to all young girls and women. Katie's retirement match at the weekend in Croke Park drew 80,000 people to Dublin. Anyone who was there will know that it lit up Dublin. It was an amazing experience and was very emotional for many people there. I thank Katie for all that she has done for boxing, for sport in Ireland and, more importantly, for positively raising the profile of women's participation in sport. I wish her all the best in her retirement from professional boxing.
