Text
This summer, the farming community completely lost confidence in the Alliance Agriculture Minister, Andrew Muir. His catalogue of failures has annoyed so many, but that frustration tipped into anger and disgust following his Department's open-field shooting of 51 healthy cattle in Fivemiletown, leaving many healthy calves walking wounded. That was such irresponsibility, yet, yesterday, in typical Alliance fashion, the Minister again proved why he has plummeted to being the lowest-rated Minister of Agriculture in the history of the state. His condescending, sneering, blame-game attitude to everybody was hysterical and reflective of a man completely out of control. He blamed the farmers for being right-wing, misogynistic and homophobic and for being farmers. He blamed the DUP for climate change, inaction on tuberculosis and for championing the needs of the farmers. He blamed other unionists for the same, yet there was not one moment of self-reflection on his miserable record as Agriculture Minister in Northern Ireland. On a platform at the front of this Building, I committed to tabling a motion of no confidence in the Minister on behalf of the DUP. Promises made, promises kept. Yesterday, I lodged that motion with the Business Office, and I am pleased to say that there have already been signatures from my party and, indeed, others. The motion is open for all Members to sign, so the question is this: where does Sinn Féin stand on the issue? Gemma Brolly, the deputy leader of Aontú, said outside this very Building that, as a proud republican, she believes that Muir must go. I would wager that, if she were in the Chamber today, she would sign the motion, so where are the brave republicans and proud nationalists on the Benches opposite? Will they join in signing the motion and standing up for the farmers? What about the bold Daniel McCrossan? Will his angry words turn into action, or will it be further hot air? Time will tell which republicans and nationalists in the Chamber are prepared to stand up for the interests of the farming community, which is the backbone of Northern Ireland. Time will tell. There will be nowhere to hide, and, if you fail to sign, I wager that there will be many Gemma Brollys sitting on the Benches opposite come next May.
