Text
I have already said that we support the amendment. The Member will be aware that the Criminal Justice (Northern Ireland) Order 2008 sought to remove remission in respect of offences that are subject to Probation Board supervision and recall to custody. That was done for very good reason. The key, however, is that those who are under Probation Board supervision will often have their release planned weeks in advance. They will have had time to prepare, and they will have support from probation to find accommodation and resettle. There is not the gap that occurs with the other adult sentences that the Member is identifying. Therefore, from our perspective, the fact that we have that warning, which is because those individuals tend to be serving longer sentences, and can prepare in advance means that people are less likely to face the kind of challenges that the Member has suggested.
