Text

The Member will recall that the most expensive interventions are late-stage interventions. That is the first thing. The cheapest and most successful interventions, with the best value for money, are early-stage interventions. When you take young people through court and criminalise them — even out-of-court disposals require a young person to go through the charge system — it costs money that would be better spent were it deflected, along with the young person, away from that kind of justice and into systems that would give them the support that they need in order to desist from offending. To me, that is the point. This is not just about the heart; it is also about the head. That would be a better value-for-money solution, even more so if, in the long run, those young people go on to live more productive lives.
