Text
I was horrified at the riots that took place in Northern Ireland, which were really dark. On Friday, in my constituency in the Western Trust area, political parties stood together at the South West Acute Hospital and Altnagelvin Area Hospital sites to say no to racist abuse and intimidation of our healthcare staff. Whilst I understand people's right to protest, it crossed a line. Violence is wrong, and we have to condemn it side by side. I was cared for in hospital, and my daughter was cared for in hospital, by international doctors and nurses, and I want to say, "Thank you" to them.
Sorry.
I want to ensure that they feel safe, that they are protected and that they are valued in our health service. The abuse has not been isolated to recent days; it has been present for healthcare staff for quite some time. Minister, will you, please, work with the Justice Minister and all Ministers to ensure that the perpetrators of that racial abuse stop and are held to account?
