Text

I take it that the Member's question is about the closed period for slurry spreading. There has been analysis of the science in that regard and of the importance of improving water quality and safeguarding our watercourses. I acknowledge the good work that farmers do across Northern Ireland on environmental stewardship, of which there are many examples. The Department's focus is not on changing the closed period; it is on looking at issues such as the planning process associated with covered slurry stores. That is something on which we are actively engaging with stakeholders, because that also relates back to our obligations to reduce the levels of ammonia in Northern Ireland. I hope that that will be concluded in the short time ahead.
