Text
I am happy to do so. To reassure the Member, there is no opt-out when it comes to teaching religious education in our schools. Quite the opposite: it is a legal requirement that religious education and religious instruction are carried out in our schools. That includes acts of collective worship that take place in our schools. I am delighted to have been in so many schools where there is collective worship on a daily occurrence, which ought to be encouraged. Mainstream denominations have welcomed inspection because they want to make sure, as we introduce a new curriculum on RE, which is being developed under Professor Noel Purdy's leadership, that that has academic rigour. They have nothing to fear from that being inspected, and, where it can be improved, as inspection does carry the purpose of improvement, that will enhance the teaching of religious education in our schools. I hope that that has assured the Member. Far from diluting religious instruction and education in our schools, I am seeking to enhance it.
