  1. Debate contribution: Democratic Consent Resolution

    • Private Members' Business
    • As a minister

I thank the Member for giving way. There are many votes in the House where my vote counts for less than his vote and, indeed, those of other Members of the House. You are right: of course we are up in arms. Treating every Member of the House equally is the very definition of democracy.

    • Private Members' Business

On a point of order, Mr Speaker. Is it in order, when the Chair has ruled on a matter — the Speaker has ruled that a legitimate vote will take place this evening — for a Member to continue to challenge the ruling of the Chair in this way?

    • Private Members' Business
    • As a minister

On a point of order, Mr Speaker. A number of Members have called this vote some kind of a "fix", and now, the legitimacy of the vote is being referred to. Can you confirm to the House that this vote is entirely legitimate and is in order in how it is about to proceed?

    • Private Members' Business
    • As a minister

  7. Debate contribution: Democratic Consent Resolution

    • Private Members' Business
    • As a minister

I thank the Member for giving way. I am presuming that he has read his party's manifestos from 2016, 2017 and 2022, all of which called for reform of the institutions. In fact, the earlier ones actually called for voluntary coalition. Does the Member now demur from those positions?

  8. Debate contribution: Arbitration Bill: Legislative Consent Motion

    • Executive Committee Business
    • As a minister

I beg to move I am grateful for the opportunity to speak about the Arbitration Bill, which is progressing through Parliament. Arbitration is a form of dispute resolution that offers an alternative to court. Parties can agree to appoint a third party or to resolve a dispute between themselves privately and issue an…
